Full gas racing at the Bretagne Classic

The last French World Tour event of the season, Bretagne Classic took place Sunday afternoon over a 254.8km course comprising more than two dozen climbs which were ideal for those whose plan was to follow the trend of recent years and force a selection instead of leaving the race to come down to a bunch sprint.

A stage winner last month at the Tour de Wallonie, Davide Ballerini was among those who tested the waters long before the finish, but his attack, despite being a spirited one, was reeled in by the peloton. As the kilometers ticked down, more riders zipped away from the field, three groups being scattered across the road inside the final hour of racing.

At the base of the last hill, it all came back together, but only for a brief moment, as another group soon took off. The firepower there was enough for them to hold off the chase, and the race concluded with the victory of Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). Mikkel Honoré ended as Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s best finisher, in 16th place, in what was his first outing with the team since Clasica San Sebastian.
